Skye Perry Norton |
Theresa Brodzinski-Norton |
| Skye was born in Oberlin, Ohio on January 23,1976. He grew up on a farm in a small town nearby. As a young boy, Skye would often wander off from his parents at the local county fair. Thankfully, his parents knew they would find him watching the glass blowers at work. On a third grade field trip to a local Quaker village, he saw gaffers creating traditional Murano-style blown glass. It was at this moment he knew that he wanted to become a glass artist. As the years passed, Skye tried his hand at other types of art. He developed a skill for making jewelry from wire and gemstones, slowly trading and selling jewelry for soda lime glass and tools to get started in the medium. It wasn't until Skye was in his early twenties that he discovered borosilicate lampworking. The creative wheels began turning, and he decided to pursue borosilicate work immediately. Skye made the transition from soft glass to borosilicate, and has not looked back. He began by making small things at first, beads and small marbles, then expanded by applying what he had learned from soda lime to borosilicate, and eventually progressed into blown tube work. He has learned many techniques from videos, books, seminars, and classes taught by master glass artists, yet he also learns experientially by trying to act on his own unique ideas. He remains fascinated by borosilicate glass due to its endless possibilities and its unexplored territories . His goal is to take borosilicate art glass to a new level, and being self-taught has allowed him to become a versatile, unique, and creative artist. In August 2005 he was certified by Glass Alchemy Ltd. owner Henry Grimmett to teach "The Fundamental Science of Borosilicate Color". This seminar and subsquent certification has helped him to achieve higher quality and clarity in the colors and dichroic in his art. All of the artist's work is signed and dated and bears series numbers when applicable. Skye will continue to bend the rules and explore unseen corners with borosilicate glass, aspiring to create the most unique art glass on the planet, and hoping that his work will be enjoyed for generations to come. |
| Theresa Brodzinski-Norton hails from New Philadelphia, OH. Born March 4, 1980, she lived there until leaving for college at the University of Houston (Honors College) in Texas. Ever since she was a small child, she has always loved all forms of art and music. Throughout her young life, she worked with acrylics, oil paints, and pencil drawing. Later, she studied and worked with ceramic pottery, and has worked as a seamstress/clothing designer. Music has been a huge presence in her life. She can play trumpet, harmonica, and a little accordion, and acoustic 12-string guitar remains one of her passions. As a young adult she still carried artistic aspirations, but had yet to find her medium of choice. A visit to Colorado in 1998 sparked a love affair with the Rocky Mountains. It was the spark of inspiration she had longed for. In the fall of 2000 she left Texas, turning her back on a college scholarship, to move to Fort Collins, Colorado and pursue her dreams. It was here that she first was introduced to glass as a medium, and the idea was born to pursue glass blowing as a career. It was also here that she first met Skye Perry Norton and they decided to pool their resources and start a workshop together. She is mainly self-taught, and though she studied art history while in college, she has received no formal art training. This allows her to go beyond any perceived limitations, to move beyond the accepted realm of what is art. Now that she has determined glass is her chosen medium, Theresa has been working diligently for the past four years to develop a unique style, to find her voice in the global glass art community. In August 2005, she was certified by Glass Alchemy Ltd. to teach "the Fundamental Science of using Colored Borosilicate". Because of this course, Theresa has a solid grasp on the chemistry that is involved in working colored glass and uses this knowledge to achieve superior results in her work. She took third place honors at the Ohio Art on the Square Festival in June, 2006. Artist's statement "I am constantly trying to expand my knowledge of glass and my vision for its use. I have chosen glass as a medium because of its long-standing tradition, and specifically borosilicate for its versatility and durability. I am very passionate about both the natural world and the human condition. These are my biggest creative influences. I want to inspire people to question, think, and act: to change when change is needed and to hold fast when something is worth defending. I also want to inspire a feeling of awe with my work. I can best explain it as that feeling you get when experiencing something beautiful beyond description, maybe the most amazing sunset you've ever seen, or the perfect harmony in a song, and you are so overwhelmed it's hard to know whether to laugh or cry, but you feel it right down to the very core of your being, It's the feeling of being alive in the moment, that makes you want to create a thousand more of those moments. This is what creating (glass) art is to me, and what I hope to share with the world." |
| Artist's statement |
| All of my art is straight from the heart and fueled by my passion for the borosilicate glass medium. My biggest influences are my Native American roots and passion for nature. I am also driven every day by my own will to be successful, and to help carry on the tradition of flameworking. What is most fulfilling to me is to create a piece of art from my inspiration and then to see it inspire the rest of the community as well. The best feeling in the world is when someone else sees my work, and it inspires a smile. That satisfaction drives me to keep creating more works of art. Working with borosilicate glass is a symphony of heat, metal oxides, and sand harmonizing to become one creation. As a lampworker, I am the conductor of that symphony. |
